MY TEACHING APPROACH
Music and playing the piano have always been a source of great joy for me.
My first teacher, at age four, was Mr. Siegel, a classical teacher who made every lesson a delight by sharing with me his deep love of music and music making. I have carried the memory of those first lessons into a lifetime of experience in many diverse worlds of music – from classical to salsa to Brazilian to jazz, pop, rock, and Broadway – and into my further studies with Seymour Bernstein, Sofia Rosoff, and Mike Longo.
I draw on my wide-ranging musical life in my customized lessons with my own students.
I won’t teach you just the mechanics of reproducing a piece of music on the piano. Instead, I aim to develop your understanding of how music works (theory) and your sensitivity to the different levels of sound the piano is capable of creating. I don’t have a pre-conceived course of study; rather; in partnership with you, I develop a practical and enjoyable path that will help you to develop your relationship with the piano and music in general.
Studying begins with a free consultation in which we talk about your previous experience, clarify your goals, and design together a doable plan for making progress in the areas of music that are important to you, including a clear practice routine.
I constantly try new strategies and games to ensure progress, and I enjoy helping students to overcome whatever obstacles may come up (if any!). For children, homework can include musical apps that can make practicing something they will enjoy.
I look forward to consulting with you.

Steve Sandberg is not only a great teacher full of years and years of experience with many styles of music but also a virtuoso pianist, composer and arranger. Every time we’d play, I’d walk away with a fresh outlook on playing. You don't have to play piano to learn from him.
